The power of gratitude

Gratitude doesn't cost anything but in terms of our mental and body health it is priceless.

Studies show us that by cultivating gratitude we are likely to lower our stress levels and manifest good feelings in our mind and body.  In the same way that we feed and nourish our bodies every day with food and drink, we can learn to appreciate what is good in our lives, every single day! We can learn to feed ourselves positive aspects of our current lives, e.g. giving thanks for having good mental health, having sufficient money in our bank account and being surrounded by loving and caring friends and family members.

Each day upon waking, come up with three more aspects to feel grateful for. We keep a note pad by our bed so that each positive thought can be recorded and reviewed at night time before sleeping.

If you are having a particularly bad day take some time out to consider what is good about your day and give thanks to whatever that happens to be, e.g. this might be hearing the birds singing outside your window, savouring all the flavours in your lunchtime meal, or appreciating the sights and sounds during your journey home from work. The list is endless and you get to choose what is on your own personal menu of positive aspects that occur indoors and outdoors.

We suggest trying this for at least three months, and why not get a partner or friend to do this with you?, the advantage being that you can offer each other encouragement and support on this interesting journey. But of course there is no reason why you can't continue this for ever, and we can assure that you, your friends, family and colleagues will feel the benefits. Both you and them will notice how much more tolerant, patient and accepting you have become.
